  1. The main advantage of rammed earth over other types of construction lies in the finished homes' thick walls. According to David Easton in "The Rammed Earth House," rammed earth homes usually have walls that are between 18 and 24 inches thick (46 and 61 cm), creating a feeling of warmth and quiet. In addition, the walls have tremendous thermal mass, meaning they keep the house nice and cool in the summer and relatively warm when it gets cooler outside. When they are well-built, rammed earth homes use one-third as much energy for heating and cooling as do conventional homes [source: Whipple]. Thick walls also make rammed earth homes rodent resistant, because they don't contain anything rodents or insects can eat.
