  1. Flavius Aëtius was a Roman general who lived from approximately 396 to 454 A.D. When Gaul was attacked repeatedly, Aëtius protected it. He drove back the Visigoths and the Franks, and won his most famous victory in 451 - over Attila and his Huns at Châlons. During the reign of Valentinian III, Aëtius made himself ruler of the entire Roman Empire, but eventually the true emperor stabbed him to death.
