Scientists can transplant genes from one organism into the cells of another organism. Genes are what give organisms specific features. Using precise methods, scientists can engineer crops so that they grow in a wider range of conditions. They can also make plants resistant to herbicides and pesticides or even increase crop yields. These new plants could, in theory, grow in regions that traditionally have trouble supporting crops.
