The essential difference between the applications (apps) of Android and those of iPhone is that with Android, it's possible for developers to create complex apps that run in the background of other apps. With iPhone, the applications are all in the foreground. That means if you switch from one app to another, the first one stops working until you go back to it. In addition, the Android operating system is designed to work on phones built by different manufacturers.
