  1. Nicotine has negative affects on the bodies of smokers. However, the very mechanism in nicotine that affects the brain is also being researched for its health benefits. A lower incidence of Alzheimer's disease in smokers led to research on the effect nicotine has on nerve cells. Nicotine patches given to Alzheimer's patients slowed loss of their cognitive abilities, and in some cases even led to improvement; this finding may help elderly people with the decline in cognitive abilities that comes with old age. Another study showed that nicotine may promote growth of new blood vessels, which could aid in the treatment of diabetes. The effect of nicotine on the release of certain neurotransmitters might also be able to help treat depression.
