Although chocolate contains compounds similar to those found in marijuana, morphine and ecstasy - - and people certainly enjoy their chocolate fixes - - you don't see people getting stoned from chocolate and it's not sold by pharmacists or pushers. The quantities of drugs found in chocolate are pretty low, and our brains have gotten used to compounds that release pleasure-inducing chemicals, thanks to the hefty amounts of chocolate, coffee and energy drinks we consume. The body tries to maintain its equilibrium, balancing the different chemicals in the body. When pleasurable compounds like dopamine or serotonin are released artificially after we eat chocolate, our bodies shut down receptors that release hormones naturally. We thereby gradually become less sensitized to the effects of the mood-affecting compounds in chocolate.
