Tarot decks come in many versions, each with different illustrations and a different number of cards. Decks also have different themes, such as animals, dragons or nature. The most common deck of Tarot cards in the United States is the 78-card Rider-Waite deck. It was created by A.E. Waite of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn occult group, illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith and published by Rider & Company in 1909.
Each Tarot deck has a Minor Arcana and a Major Arcana. The Minor Arcana is made up of four suits (wands, swords, cups and circles/pentacles, which are numbered one through 10, plus the members of the court). These cards represent the minor, practical ups and downs of daily life. The Major Arcana cards are numbered one through 21, plus a "Fool" marked zero. They are picture cards representing concepts, principles, ideals and big life events.
