Both the French and the Belgians named their territories after the Bakongo people, and so the two countries became known as French Congo and Belgian Congo. I used to get confused so I thought of them as bonobo Congo (Belgian Congo/Democratic Republic of Congo) and chimpanzee Congo (French Congo/Republic of Congo), because even though there are chimpanzees in both countries, there are only bonobos in one.
