Some surge protectors have a built-in fuse. Fuses are resistors. They direct electrical current as long as the current stays at a standard level. If the current increases, and isn't handled by normal protection mechanisms, the fuse will resist, generating heat that will make it burn. This will cut off the circuit, stopping the electric current and saving any machines connected to the surge protector. The fuse can only be used once, as it burns up and gets destroyed when it responds to a power surge.
