One of the biggest proponents of green industries is government, both federal and local. These governments are adopting policies and passing legislation that are increasing the demand for alternative energy sources, requiring water and energy conservation, and encouraging locally grown foods. More than half of the states in the United States for example, have mandated that significant portions of their energy needs be met with alternative sources. Also, the federal government has sponsored initiatives like the Green Jobs Act that train workers in green-collar industries [source: Sightline]. Labor unions and environmentalists have also teamed up to increase public awareness of environmental issues to promote investment in green industries that will require more workers.
