What stands in the way of eliminating private vehicles?

  1. The biggest obstacle in getting rid of our cars is our own attitude. People value the privacy and freedom they have as vehicle owners. To give that up would require a major shift in our values. A gradual shift from private ownership might work but it would require years of incentives -- or disincentives -- to convince consumers that shifting to a public system makes more sense. And there will always be people and businesses that will require private transportation based upon where they live or work.
