The biggest obstacle in getting rid of our cars is our own attitude. People value the privacy and freedom they have as vehicle owners. To give that up would require a major shift in our values. A gradual shift from private ownership might work but it would require years of incentives -- or disincentives -- to convince consumers that shifting to a public system makes more sense. And there will always be people and businesses that will require private transportation based upon where they live or work.
