  1. Encryption is a means of keeping information safe from theft or unauthorized use. Each time information is collected and shared between two computers, there is an opportunity for a third party to access that information and use it to his or her advantage. Considering the amount and types of information we share electronically, the importance of keeping it secure is obvious. You don't want thieves and hackers to see your personal e-mail, SSN or credit card and bank account information. Modern encryption encodes such information so it can only be retrieved or accessed through the use of an electronic key.
