Plug-in hybrid cars are touted for their fuel efficiency, which is accurate. However, fuel efficiency should not be confused with energy efficiency. Plug-in hybrids are powered either by gas or electricity. Using electricity instead of gas helps hybrids have good fuel efficiency, which helps reduce the use of and dependency on oil. However, as an overall energy-efficient or environmentally friendly vehicle, hybrids still have some challenges to overcome. When not powered by gas, the hybrid car uses electricity and must be regularly recharged. Most electricity still comes from burning coal -- hardly a clean energy.
