  1. Eratosthenes was born in Cyrene, which is now Libya, and studied philosophy in Athens. He was appointed chief of the library in Alexandria, perhaps the greatest library of the ancient world. Although he wrote many scientific treatises, Eratosthenes' greatest accomplishment was figuring out the measurement of the Earth's circumference. He lived from 276 to 196 B.C.
