Linguist Noam Chomsky and evolutionary biologist Stephen Gould believe that language evolved as a result of other evolutionary processes. This essentially makes language a byproduct of evolution and not a specific adaptation. They pose the theory that many human behaviors are something Gould calls "spandrels." This is when a species uses an adaptation for a purpose other than what it was initially meant for, like bird feathers that were initially only for insulation.
