Thomas Davenport designed an electric vehicle in Vermont in 1834 or 1835, using two electromagnets, a pivot and a battery. However the material for Davenport's design was too expensive, making the cost of the electromagnetic car impractical. After Davenport, other inventors around the world also tinkered with producing electric cars. However, the first functional electric car was built by British inventor Thomas Parker in 1884. Parker, who also was responsible for creating the electrical system for the London Underground, was moved by London's increasing pollution to develop a more eco-friendly, electric car.
