  1. The International Federation of Robotics expects the world population of industrial robots to exceed 1.1 million by 2013. Back in 1961, however, General Motor's Unimate robot was the first of its kind. The robot boasted a 4,000-pound (1,814-kilogram) arm and could manipulate 500-pound (227-kilogram) payloads with ease.
