  1. In Moonlight Maze, unknown attackers managed to gain access to multiple computer systems at the Pentagon and other establishments, including NASA. Classified materials stolen included strategic information and troop locations. Investigators traced the attackers to Russia, but it's unclear from where they actually originated. This attack happened in 1998, but it was discovered --by accident -- in 2000 [source: Frontline].
