  1. Henry Hudson was an English explorer who had been searching for a northeast passage to Asia via the Arctic Ocean. As he was having no luck with that, the Dutch East India Company contracted with him to find a northwest passage to Asia, via North America. He did not find a route to Asia this time either, but he did find Long Island, Manhattan and the famous river that would come to be named for him.
