  1. Some sources credit Southwest Airlines with offering the first e-tickets in 1994, although other sources state ValueJet, based in Atlanta, beat Southwest to it in 1993. By the end of the 1990s, the industry said half of all tickets were e-tickets, which seemed a function of the public's growing comfort with the Internet at the time. September 11, 2001, led the government to watch the purchase and use of e-tickets more closely. In most cases, just a government-issued photo ID is needed to claim boarding passes at airports, but the Transportation Security Administration says passengers should contact airlines to make sure.
