Hope is a coping mechanism, and it can foster a positive attitude that gets someone through a rough patch. Hope can also inspire change and action that creates the desired situation. For example, if a student hopes to pass a tough math class, he or she may enlist the help of a tutor, study an extra hour each day and prioritize math homework. Because the student has thought about the ideal situation, he or she won't give up when a lesson is too hard; rather, that student may redouble his or her efforts. When hope can inspire this type of action, it's a good thing.
