While the car is raised on your jack, place the spare tire on the hub. The shallower side of the spare tire should face out. Tighten the lug nuts evenly but not with a lot of force, moving from one lug nut to the opposite one. Lower the car, until the new tire reaches the ground but isn't fully resting on it, then tighten the nuts again. Crank the nuts yet again -without straining - after the jack is removed.
