  1. Not all balls that make it through the basketball hoop are scored equally. Most shots sunk into the hoop - jump shots, dunks and lay-ups - earn a team two points each. To earn an extra point per shot, players must shoot the ball from beyond the three-point line. If a player is fouled and shoots the ball from the free-throw line, those shots are worth one point each.
