  1. Sidewalls represent the largest area of exposure to the outdoors on most houses, so it's important to insulate them against heat flow. Sidewall insulation can be made from fiberglass, cellulose fiber or foam. Any of these materials will help prevent the loss of heat from inside the house and help stop outside air from getting in. You can inject some foam into gaps in the sidewall to enhance insulation you already have.

    Sidewall insulation usually is installed from the outside, and it should be left to experts. If your home is sided with stucco, you can patch holes with stucco-cement materials, and if you drill through wooden clapboard siding, you can plug the holes with plastic caps and then paint over them. Installers can add insulation from the inside by drilling holes in the drywall or plaster.
