Gasoline is lighter and less oily than diesel fuel. At one point, diesel was cheaper than gasoline because less refining was needed to produce diesel. This changed in 2004 when demand for diesel began to rise, thanks to increased industrialization and construction in the U.S. and China [source: Energy Information Administration]. Diesel's energy density is higher than that of gasoline. This higher density level, along with the diesel engine's fuel efficiency, is the reason diesel vehicles get better mileage than those with gasoline engines. Biodiesel fuel additive is just one of several innovations in diesel fuel technology; made from animal fats or plant oils instead of petroleum, biodiesel can be added to a diesel engine with virtually no modification required.
