  1. During the Second Punic War, the Carthaginian general Hannibal led troops through Europe, crossing the Alps and eventually reaching the Po River. He started with 40,000 men and 37 elephants in New Carthage. The elephants would hold soldiers who sat atop them to throw javelins. The group started along the Mediterranean coast and moved up the Rhone River valley, meeting no Roman resistance along the way. In the autumn of 218 B.C., Hannibal decided to cross the Alps. This hike was more treacherous - his troops had to fight Gauls, landslides and snowfall to get to the other side. Along the way, he lost 14,000 men and most of his elephants.
