  1. During the 1970s, surfboarding fans were disappointed by the lack of ocean waves on the beaches of Southern California. They began using skateboards in empty parking lots in Los Angeles, but apparently it wasn't exciting enough. Vertical surfaces were seen as the key to getting an extreme sporting experience, and empty swimming pools, pipes, ramps and the world's first skate park at Carlsbad, California, sprang up to fill the need. Competitions followed, sponsors lined up and eventually the X Games were created.
