Ink is generally made by combining a liquid with either a pigment or a dye. A dye is a colored material that will dissolve completely into a liquid base of some kind. This liquid base can be any of a variety of substances, such as water, oil or alcohol. Pigments, unlike dyes, don't dissolve completely. Pigments are tiny, uniformly colored particles that remain suspended in a liquid base.
