Specifically, they incorporated the spontaneity and free-form expressiveness of jazz music. They also used a rhythmic beat (hence, Beat Generation) taken from jazz to create a musical quality in their poetry. In particular, they used the syncopated style of emphasizing the off beat of a rhythm as they read their poetry aloud.
