  1. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, just shy of 1.02 billion people were undernourished at some point in 2009. That included 642 million people in Asia and the Pacific, 265 million in sub-Saharan Africa, 53 million in Latin America and the Caribbean, and 42 million people in the Near East and North Africa. Developed nations accounted for the final 15 million.
