How would a space elevator work?

  1. Scientists plan to build a space elevator, which resembles a game of tetherball. The Earth would serve as the pole anchoring the ball, a strip of carbon nanotubes composite ribbon would be stretched taught into space, a counterweight would keep the ribbon taught (acting like the ball in tetherball) and a lifter would travel along the ribbon between Earth and space. The lifter would have traction rollers to keep it along the ribbon.
