  1. There are many different ways to prepare your body for running a marathon. The following is a basic regimen:

    • Take a weekly long run. A marathon is 26.2 miles (42.16 kilometers), so each week you should gradually increase the distance you run until you're able to complete a marathon.
    • Cross-train on your rest days. Keep your running muscles in shape by swimming or cycling.
    • Do speedwork, also known as interval training. For example, include bouts of sprinting during your runs.
