Deciding to home-school your children is a life-changing decision, and you'll have many things to consider as you begin the process of setting up your home-school plans. In addition to making the decision to devote your time and resources to your child's education, it's very important that you know the special rules that your state has in place for home schooling. Each state has particular requirements for home schools.
In general, most states have some basic legal requirements, which aim to regulate home schools and ensure that students are getting the best possible education. A few basic things that most states require include the following:
- You must register a home school.
- Children of compulsory school age must attend.
- The teacher(s) must meet a minimum level of education.
- The school must have a regular schedule that runs at least nine months a year.
- Students must take nationally recognized tests or evaluations each year and the results must be available [source: North Carolina DNPE].
Because each state has different requirements, you'll want to be sure you know the ones for your particular area. The following Web sites can help you understand the basics and connect you to relevant laws for your state:
- National Home Education Network
- A to Z Home's Cool Homeschooling
- Home Education Magazine
- Home School Legal Defense Association
Home-schooling laws can be very particular, and as home schooling is becoming more popular, states frequently revise and add to their laws and requirements. Make sure you're looking at the most up-to-date information: It might help to connect with other home-schoolers in your area so you can help each other understand all the requirements.
