  1. Several months before the Olympic Games begin, the torch is lit at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, Greece, where the ancient Olympics were held. In the modern games, a woman dressed up as an ancient Greek priestess ignites the flame. The torch is lit in exactly the same way as it was in ancient Greece: by using a parabolic mirror to harness the sun's rays. The priestess holds the torch at the center of the parabolic mirror, causing the fuel in the torch to ignite and produce a flame. Once the flame is lit, the torch is brought to an altar located in the stadium of the ancient Olympic Games. There, the flame is used to ignite the first relay runner's torch.
