Cleaning and maintaining your home appliances can help you save energy and money:
- Keep the radiators and baseboard convectors of your hot water or electric baseboard heating system clean so that nothing obstructs the air flow. Open the convector covers and vacuum or brush the fins that distribute heat; then straighten any that are bent.
- Get your ducts cleaned annually and have them checked for leaks, because about 25 percent of air ends up in the wrong place if ducts leak. Smearing duct-sealing material on the duct's joints works better than duct tape.
- Check that the diverter vanes in the ducts are clean and working properly.
- Insulate your ducts with wrapping or sleeve insulation - especially any ducts that pass through unheated attics or crawlspaces.
Finally, step outside to make sure the flow to your air conditioner's outdoor compressor unit is not obstructed by foliage or decks built around the compressor.
