The earliest mammoths lived in Africa, Europe and Asia about 5 million years ago. They lived throughout the Ice Age; most became extinct about 10,000 years ago, although some dwarf mammoths survived until nearly 4,000 years ago. Most likely, the combination of an increasingly warm climate and human hunting killed off the mammoths. Entire mammoths were found frozen in Siberia and Alaska, allowing scientists to examine the perfectly preserved elephant ancestors.
