  1. No one knows exactly how many Americans live off the grid. A 2006 estimate put the number of people who produce their own electrical power at 180,000. That same estimate adds another 27,000 Americans who supplement their existing energy with solar and wind power [source: USA Today]. Many of those who live off the grid are in rural areas, but there is also a movement among some urban dwellers to get off the grid, too.
