There are those who say you can still hear, and even sometimes see the ghost of Marco Polo's wife in Venice, Italy. One way to do that is to take the Venice Ghost Walking Tour. You'll visit the Milione, and hear about Marco Polo, who worked for the Chinese emperor Kublai Khan for 17 years and eventually married Khan's daughter, Hao Dong, who followed Marco on all his travels. However, when he finally settled back in his home town of Venice, Hao Dong found herself shunned by the people who mistrusted her foreign looks and ways. She shut herself up in her house with only her own songs for company. Marco Polo himself was criticized for marrying a woman who was not a Christian, and eventually he was imprisoned. His sister Lucia led Hao Dong to believe that her husband had died, and Hao Dong set herself alight and threw herself into the Grand Canal. Her ghost is said to be seen and her eerie songs heard even to this day along the watery streets of Venice.
