When Megalosaurus fossils first were discovered in Oxfordshire, England, James Parkinson gave the dinosaur a name meaning "great lizard." At that time, nobody had heard of a dinosaur, and scientists thought that the Megalosaurus was just a massive reptile. For years afterward, whenever a scientist found a large theropod fossil in Europe, he called it a Megalosaurus. What's more, dinosaurs as diverse as the Tyrannosaurus, Allosaurus and Dilophosaurus were all mistakenly as added to Megalosaurus' family. Because seemingly anything and everything was misidentified as a Megalosaurus or grouped with it, scientists jokingly call the Megalosauridae the "waste basket" family. Scientists have since gone back and correctly identified the mislabeled fossils.
