The size of the human brain distinguishes us from other species, but in order to support those growing brains, our ancestors had to eat a lot of food. They consumed diets full of meat, which was rich with nutrients and vitamins, but also hard to come by. That means that our early ancestors had to hunt wild game, sometimes in vast spaces and challenging conditions. Every bit of food they took in was converted to energy, either to develop their brains or to fuel those extensive hunting expeditions. Today, we consume an abundance of calories, but we don't expend as much energy as our ancestors did.
