Ed Passerini and Larry Perkins were the first people to build solar cars, in 1977 and 1982, respectively. Early in the 21st century, Mazda and Ford came out with concept cars that were solar hybrids, or partially solar-powered, and Cadillac has produced a model with some solar-powered internal accessories.
Although there are no totally solar cars on the consumer market yet, designers and engineers keep refining them and companies are working on ways to get around the industry's dependence on gasoline.
