In the early 21st century, psychiatry began reevaluating MDMA, or Ecstasy, as a tool in therapy. Particularly, researchers are interested in the drug's use as a psychotherapeutical catalyst, something that can kick start the emotions needed to heal psychologically. Currently, researchers are using MDMA in small clinical trials to learn of its effectiveness as a treatment for conditions like post-traumatic stress disorder, a condition the drug was used to treat before it was outlawed in 1985.
