Humans and chimps share a common ancestor. Five million years ago, this common ancestor lived in rainforests, and its descendants evolved into separate species. Humans are genetically closer to chimpanzees than any other animal. Chimpanzees are more genetically similar to humans than they are to other primates like orangutans or gorillas. This similarity has led some scientists to speculate that the violent behaviors of humans and chimpanzees may originate with this common ancestor.
