  1. While detonating a nuclear weapon on or inside an asteroid could theoretically push it off course, the best method would be to detonate the nuke at a distance. This standoff explosion would push the asteroid away from Earth without breaking it up into additional, potentially troublesome fragments. After all, you want to deter an incoming asteroid, not break it up into smaller incoming asteroids.
