    TRANSCRIPT:

It's sometimes sad that physicists are the only scientists who can say the word God and not blush. If you want to see a physicist blush, ask him what happened before the Big Bang. You see, Einstein's equations -- which gives us the architecture of the universe, space and times and black holes -- break down at the two most interesting places in the universe: the incident of the Big Bang and the center of a black hole. In order to complete this architecture, we need a new theory, a theory that goes right past the Big Bang into the pre-Big Bang era, a theory, which goes right through a black hole and that theory is string theory.

Some people say, "Maybe I don't like string theory. Give me another theory. Give me an alternative." I tell them, "There is none." This is the only game in town. For the past 50 years, hundreds of proposals have been made for a theory of everything. Each one has been shot down. The only one, which still stands, is string theory. String theory may one day give us an understanding of the pre-Big Bang era.
