  1. The most common light bulb is the incandescent bulb, which has been in use in homes since its invention in the 1800s. It is an excellent source of light, but newer technology has made it an inefficient lighting source. The compact fluorescent light (CFL) is gaining popularity because it is more energy efficient. In fact, by the year 2012 it will be a major source of lighting because a government mandate requires that the CFL replace the incandescent light bulb [source: Linden]. Another energy efficient form of lighting is the light-emitting diode (LED) light bulb. While it works well and continues to be improved, it is more expensive to purchase as an upfront cost and is not yet in popular demand.
