Twitter works on your cell phone through the Short Message Service (SMS) protocol. SMS is what makes text messages move back and forth between cell phones. If you send a text message to Twitter, your message goes out to your personal network. Before it can move from Twitter to everybody you know, your message goes to an MSC (mobile switching center), from there to an STP (signal transfer point) and finally to an SMSC (short message service center).
