  1. Desertification is not just a problem in developing areas like southern Africa. Large sections of the United States are at risk as well. Based on climate and soil type, 17 states in the American West are categorized as arid, semi-arid or dry. The areas most affected are in New Mexico, Texas, Arizona and some American Indian reservations. And the problem could potentially get worse. Data over the last 30 years indicates the Southwest especially has become hotter and drier, putting nearly half of the continental U.S. at risk.
