If there is no U.S. draft, why is there a Selective Service System?

  1. The United States does maintain a Selective Service System so it can quickly institute a military draft in case of a national emergency. The Selective Service System maintains a roll of all the names of American residents eligible to be drafted. It also has lottery and classification review systems already in place so they can be quickly executed if the draft is reinstated.
