After it was discovered in 1914 by a chemist at the German pharmaceutical manufacturer Merck, MDMA was mostly dismissed as a pleasure-producing compound. In the 1950s, the CIA evaluated the drug as a possible brainwashing agent. In 1978 a researcher at Dow Chemical published a paper on the drug's euphoric effects and introduced psychiatrists to the drug for use a therapy tool. It wasn't until 1985 -- more than 70 years after its discovery -- that the United States outlawed MDMA.
